The Vice President of Medical Affairs is responsible for providing clinical and scientific guidance in all areas of clinical risk, safety reviews, adverse experience reporting, product life cycle reviews, and protocol design. In all, actions will demonstrate a primary commitment to patient safety and product quality. This position will report into the SVP & Chief Medical Officer of Varian.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Promote and follow proper compliance and quality system requirements.
  • Perform medical health hazard assessment as part of the development and evaluation of product. The selected candidate will be the final decision maker, signor and ultimately serve as owner for health hazard assessments.
  • Envision the application of new and existing technologies in novel ways to solve complex medical problems and provides medical input to product development teams.
  • Provide clinical expertise/perspective on marketing ideas.
  • Develop language/presentations for Varian speaking events.
  • Review and is part of the approval team for product education, published papers, advertising and promotion, and reporting materials.
  • Provide operational support to internal teams regarding clinical and nonclinical events including protocol development, and design and evaluation of postmarket studies.
  • Provide medical and scientific guidance to internal customers.
  • Write and edit clinical and scientific reports for regulatory submission and scientific communication.
  • Provide medical and scientific information to external customers consistent with product labeling and applicable regulations.
  • Leverage internal and external resources to establish core domain expertise for medical affairs and clinical affairs initiatives.
  • Perform clinical due diligence on potential acquisitions in support of business development team.
  • Attend and participate in regional, national and international scientific, medical and regulatory meetings. Stay current with medical and scientific technologies.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with thought leaders in the medical community.
  • Manage a global team of Medical Science Liaisons.

Minimum Skills and Requirements:

  • MD: Board Certified in Radiation Oncology.
  • Knowledge and clinical experience in medical and radiation oncology.
  • Demonstrated leadership and people development skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Ability to operate in complex organizational environment.
  • Ability to work with a global team in hybrid environment.
  • Ability to travel internationally based on business needs.
  • Prior experience in Medical Director role, academic leadership role, or other Medical Device company experience desired, but not required.
  • A record of publications (peer reviewed manuscripts, abstracts and presentations at scientific conferences) is preferred.
  • Clinical Study experience preferred.
  • Experience in Translational Medicine preferred.

Travel expectation: 30-50%

Position must have full access to Varian client sites to perform the essential functions of this position. Many clients require Varian employees and representatives to meet certain Vendor Credentialing requirements before they will be allowed to have access to their sites. Unless prohibited by law, position must meet all Vendor Credentialing requirements necessary to have full client access and must continue to meet those requirements during the course of employment in this position. These requirements vary by client and may include, but are not limited to: Proof of valid identification (photo, driver's license, SSN) Criminal background checks Drug screens Immunizations (COVID-19, Hep B, MMR, Varicella, Influenza, Tetanus) Annual TB testing Healthcare training
