Job Summary

The UCSF Transplant Infectious Disease Research Program seeks a Clinical Research Supervisor whose responsibilities include the overall operational management of a diverse cross-disciplinary clinical translational research program. This position is important to the management of ongoing and future single- and multi-center observational and interventional clinical research studies (clinical trials), many of which are coordinated through UCSF as the lead/coordinating center. These include studies sponsored by NIH, industry, and foundations.

This position requires: integration and execution of diverse programmatic activities using leadership and organizational skills, deep familiarity working with critically-ill adults, including those who are awaiting or who have undergone transplant, the ability to work with diverse cross-disciplinary teams including physicians, nurses, advanced practice professionals (ARNP, PA), laboratory scientists and research technicians, and administrative staff. The Supervisor needs to effectively work with and navigate study initiation and activation including UCSF and external Institutional Review Boards (IRB), UCSF Office of Clinical Trials Activation, industry sponsors, NIH, and other clinical sites (for multisite studies). Knowledge of infectious diseases and transplant is important. Experience in recruiting and retaining patient participants from minoritized groups is critical to scientific rigor, especially for a large native Spanish speaking population cared for at UCSF. The position requires overseeing the development of standard operating procedures to ensure consistency, accuracy, and efficiency of clinical operations and to facilitate training and monitoring of other team members. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required to navigate the cross-disciplinary and cross-department/institution components of the position. Coordinating the regulatory, financial, and operational aspects of complex multicenter studies, under the primary direction of the Program PI is a major aspect of the position.

Under the primary direction of the Director of the Transplant/Oncology Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program, the Clinical Research Supervisor will have primary responsibility for local and central IRB approval, amendments, and compliance; contract negotiation and approval; supervising research staff and directly performing participant recruitment and retention including obtaining informed consent; and ensuring the execution of all aspects of observational and interventional clinical trial protocols.This position will fill the Transplant and Oncology ID Clinical Research Program's need for administrative leadership and supervision and coordination of a diverse and growing portfolio of studies. The clinical research supervisor will also have the responsibility of training and supervising staff to ensure that studies are conducted safely, accurately, and efficiently.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $95,000 - $145,000 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department in the School of Medicine (SOM) at UCSF. The mission of the Department is research, education, patient care and public service. The Department has more than 750 full-time faculty at four sites - UCSF Health, Veteran's Administration Medical Center, San Francisco General Hospital, and UCSF Fresno - and approximately 60 divisions. Central Administration at the Parnassus sites is responsible for directing the administrative functions of the Department via its sites and divisions, including the provision of research administration services for its faculty.

The Division of Infectious Diseases consists of 120 faculty, fellows, and staff whose work is grounded in deep commitment the highest standards of clinical care and teaching, as well as, research leading to new approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases. The Division of Infectious Diseases employs and trains leaders in academic, superb clinical researcher scientists and basic scientists, and outstanding clinicians. Our faculty are leading experts in adult infectious diseases.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and 3 or more years of experience; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Clinical Trial Professional certification from a professional society within one year in position
  • CITI training
  • One or more years in a Lead or Supervisory role.
  • Working knowledge of clinical or laboratory research and clinical research philosophy. Demonstrated ability to translate clinical research philosophy into business best practices in a trial setting.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, prioritize projects and meet the demands of a fast-paced and dynamic work environment. Adaptable to quickly changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated skills in employee supervision and HR administration. Demonstrated experience in training others, particularly in the field of research.
  • Demonstrates good problem-solving and analytical skills. Creatively addresses complex or new problems.
  • Clear and concise communicator; good verbal and written communication skills; both
  • Good interpersonal skills, including but not limited to: problem-solving, teamwork development, leadership, mentorship. Interpersonal skills to effectively motivate others. Works well with others to achieve common goals. Ability to cultivate relationships with multiple stakeholders at various levels of administration.
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software. Effectively uses campus' clinical information and documentation application programs. Proven ability utilizing clinical trial management systems.
  • Skills to work collaboratively with other cross-functional teams. Ability to interface and collaborate with other members of an extended study team. Ability to influence / persuade. Proven ability to effectively coordinate and integrate programs with others in division, department, and organization.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Ability to speak and write Spanish, the predominant non-English language spoken by study participants

License/Certification


  • Clinical Trial Professional certification from a professional society within one year in position
  • CITI training
