Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) ESnet has an opening for a Network Operations Engineer to join the team.

ESnet, the Energy Sciences Network, is a high speed network serving thousands of Department of Energy scientists and collaborators, and a global leader in developing and operating high performance network services. ESnet provides DOE scientists with comprehensive connectivity to the global Internet and high bandwidth access to DOE sites and primary science collaborators, including research and education (R&E) networks in the US, Europe, Asia Pacific, and elsewhere. The NOC Engineer role works for the ESnet Network Operations Center (NOC) and serves as the primary point of contact between ESnet engineers, DOE sites and vendors to provide initial network diagnoses and early problem resolution.

What You Will Do:



  • Will have responsibility for performing ESnet's incident management processes. This includes observing alarms, managing incident tickets, sending notifications, triaging outages and escalating to the appropriate parties when required.
  • Reliable attendance for scheduled shifts including providing advance notice of absences when possible.
  • Act as the primary external communicator for ESnet operational issues, including receiving requests and questions from ESnet sites, contacting carriers and peers to report problems and communicating network status to the wider ESnet community. Maintain a professional and courteous manner in all communications.
  • Interface with ESnet optical line system NOC.
  • Coordinate scheduled ESnet maintenance, including performing impact analysis and sending notifications.
  • Facilitate remote-hands work at offsite ESnet locations, including coordinating with vendors and managing shipping and receiving of required hardware.
  • Assist in managing ESnet equipment inventory.
  • Where possible, assist with hands-on equipment work at any ESnet facilities within 50 miles (e.g power-cycling equipment, replacing hardware, etc).
  • Work on and solve problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
  • Identify and propose opportunities for process improvement and automation.



What is Required:



  • Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Understanding of common networking protocols, including IPv4, IPv6, BGP and STP.
  • Knowledge and experience using the command line on networking switches and routers, such as Nokia, Cisco and Juniper.
  • Knowledge and experience with optical DWDM equipment such as Infinera, Ciena or Cisco
  • Knowledge and experience using the command line shell on Unix-based systems such as Linux or FreeBSD as well as basic system administration tasks such as checking logs, restarting services and rebooting servers.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a remote, distributed, cross-disciplinary team and contribute to a project team's effort.
  • Ability to work in an on-call rotation- including overnight and weekends and occasional holiday shifts.
  • Ability to convey a strong presence, professional image, and deal confidently with complex technical problems.
  • Ability to work and collaborate remotely with staff distributed across multiple US timezones.
  • Ability to anticipate problems, resolve ambiguity and take decisive action.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with team members, vendors and support personnel of all levels.

Notes:



  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • The full salary range of this position is between $84,600 to $142,764 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $95,172 to $116,340 per year depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work may be performed hybrid, or remote. The primary location for this role is Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work must be performed within the United States.
