Design Technologist II

As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team, you will design, evaluate, and deliver world-class high-performance wall systems, enclosures, and buildings using ICON's technology set. As an ICONIC, you will be a leader and direct contributor to the development of entirely novel approaches to high-performance buildings and you will have the opportunity to work with your team to advance humankind's ability to provide dignified, affordable, resilient, and sustainable shelter to the world. This role will report to the Director of Building Design & Performance out of our Austin, TX office.

RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Contribute to the development of ICON's concrete 3D-printed (C3DP) wall system to maximize human comfort, safety, experience, and sustainability.
  • Develop file-to-factory parametric workflows between 3D modeling environments and control systems for robotic prototyping.
  • Develop construction documents, wall assembly drawings, schematic diagrams, and building envelope details with a focus on window and door systems, waterproofing, and weatherization.
  • Develop construction diagrams to effectively communicate construction sequencing for successful integration of building envelope components and building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) in the field.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and building & material science departments to determine best practices for achieving effective weatherization, resilient design, and high thermal performance of the printed wall system.
  • Assist in the experimentation of innovative wall profiles and configurations for future application in projects.
  • Produce drawings to communicate design intent for research and development.
  • Coordinate with software engineers, print technicians, and construction operations to ensure successful implementation of wall construction in the field.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



  • 4+ years of research and/or industry experience working in complex, multi-disciplinary design and analysis projects.
  • Masters Degree in architecture, construction, industrial design, engineering or related discipline, with heavy digital and computational focus.
  • Experience with file-to-factory methodologies, rapid prototyping and robotics.
  • Knowledge of and proven practical background in Autodesk Revit, BIM 360 and related Building Information Modeling tools and processes.
  • Expertise in computational/generative design platforms, such as Grasshopper and Dynamo.
  • Proficiency in advanced software and computational workflows for 3D-printing and robotic prototyping.
  • A self-starter in deposition based 3D-printing processes.
  • Proficiency in parametric design and 3D modeling software including: Rhino/Grasshopper, Fusion 3D, Inventor, Matlab, RobotStudio, Solidworks, Fusion 360, Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Google Suite, Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Proficiency in orthographic architectural representation and diagramming.
  • Ability to represent conceptual structural prototypes as well as construction sequencing efficiently and clearly in diagrammatic representation.
  • Detailed knowledge of typical AEC project processes, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Desire to work with a highly collaborative team on a quickly evolving product and in a fast paced environment.



PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:



  • Proficiency in JavaScript, Python, and/or other programming languages, especially those associated with visual engines, BIM integration, and robotic prototyping.
  • Research publications and contributions to peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills, strong organizational skills and ability to multitask.
  • Well organized and a self-starter.
