Position ends one year after initial hire date; with the possibility of continuation depending on future funding and progress towards research goals.

Purpose

The Meyers Lab at The University of Texas at Austin is immediately seeking outstanding research associate candidates. Research Associate will model COVID-19 projects to elucidate the transmission dynamics and severity of the virus and provide decision support analyses for local and state public health agencies. This position will require a combination of technical strengths, high-level communication, leadership, and organization skills.

Responsibilities
  • Function 1: Modeling
  • Establish technical specifications and direction for the development, validation, and application of disease dynamic models to address critical public health challenges

  • Create new reusable and reproducible software components for CFA models

  • Analyze existing models to identify risks and redundancies

  • Lead design, implementation, and execution of unit, integration and system testsfor CFA models

  • Identification and formulation of novel research questions of public health concern

  • Function 2: Technical Leadership and Coordination
  • Provide specialized software, optimization, and statistical skills to team members

  • Implement collaborative software infrastructure, oversee software quality and system modifications, help team members improve workflow and code quality

  • Create standards for software performance and internal documentation and oversee implementation

  • Function 3: Communications
  • Dissemination of results to scientists, public health agencies, and general public via software code and tools, publications, reports, and presentations

  • Work with public health partners to provide quantitative ways to validate models and conduct acceptance (real-world) tests

  • Act as a liaison and professionally represent the Meyers Lab and UT Center for Pandemic Decision Science with various stakeholders, including local, state, and national government agencies.

  • Function 4: Ad Hoc
  • Other lab needs as they arise

Required Qualifications

Candidates must have completed a PhD in a quantitative science, statistics, computer science, mathematics, engineering, or a related discipline. The position will also require the ability to work quickly on time-sensitive analyses and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team. Candidates must have expertise in Python and experience with software design.

Preferred Qualifications

Multiple years of experience in designing, validating, and applying mathematical models of outbreak dynamics and control. Experience collaborating with public health professionals.

Salary Range

$120,000+ depending on qualifications

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
