Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Director, Counseling and Wellness is responsible for providing leadership and oversight for Counseling Services, The Empowerment Center, Retention and Wellness, and the Student Success Institute at Lone Star College. The position oversees functions related to student retention and wellness.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Oversee the administration of counseling and wellness services to students and community, ensuring that services are aligned with the mission and goals of the college
  2. Ensure compliance with federal and state laws regarding mental health services and college policies
  3. Analyze the effectiveness of ongoing services and oversee committees to develop strategies to improve processes and procedures
  4. Regularly assess student needs and interests by evaluating current programming and making updates and improvements as needed. Remain current on the best practices regarding counseling, wellness, career, and retention
  5. Oversee the departmental budgets for the Counseling Services, The Empowerment Center, Retention & Wellness, and Student Success Initiative departments
  6. Supervise the hiring and training of full and part-time employees. Ensure professional development of employees within the department
  7. Participate in system-wide planning committees
  8. Perform research analysis and reporting functions. Prepare and present information and updates to a variety of internal and external constituents. Collaborate with multiple LSC departments to ensure accuracy of information given to key constituents
  9. Collaborate with faculty and staff in the promotion of the colleges' programs to students and community as needed
  10. Develop internal operational processes ensuring that resources are effectively allocated, and staff and student needs are addressed
  11. Meet with students when referred to discuss any services concerns
  12. Serve on various campus and LSC- System committees and partake in a variety of meetings and conferences
  13. Provide a variety of counseling and wellness workshops for students
  14. Develop and supervise program areas of Counseling, The Empowerment Center, Retention and Wellness, and the Student Success Institute
  15. Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of counseling and wellness
  • Ability to manage operations in an extremely busy environment

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

* Experience must include at least 3 years in a management level position

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Master's degree

* Licensure in a mental health field, such as LPC

Salary

Hiring salary range is $77,356 - $88,959.

Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education. Should you receive an offer of employment from Lone Star College, the resume submitted in the application process will be utilized to calculate your salary offer.
