Position description

As a junior specialist, you will conduct field research in Yosemite National Park and subsequent experimental/laboratory research at UC field stations (SNARL or SNRI) or UC Merced. Field research will consist of biweekly to monthly sampling of five high elevation lakes from Fall into Spring of the following year, collecting measurements and water samples on site. Water samples will be returned to the lab for processing, analysis, and experiments (experiments will include nutrient and light manipulations). Laboratory work consists of performing molecular biological analyses-including DNA and RNA extraction and quantification, and PCR and quantitative PCR- and biogeochemical analyses-including measurements of dissolved oxygen, nutrients, and especially methane. Candidate will also keep track of basic lab supplies, assure availability of materials, maintain equipment, and dispose of waste. You will also assist with other tasks as assigned.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications

* B.S. in Earth Systems Science or Environmental Systems Science

* Extensive field and lab experience in microbial and biogeochemical sample collection and analysis

* Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred qualifications

* Experience and/or knowledge in computer programming skills

* Skills to integrate a variety of data

* Backcountry experience in alpine environments

* Proficiency in molecular biology lab research
