Job Summary

Manages multiple areas of responsibility, including clinical safety, industrial hygiene, facility safety, ergonomics, and related programs. Manages the professional and technical staff responsible for implementing these programs across the UCSF enterprise. Develops new programs in response to changing regulations and customer needs, ensuring institutional compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and best practices. Provides guidance and strategic direction to EH&S program managers/supervisors as needed. Oversees a spectrum of specialized technical programs and serves as a subject matter expert within one or more of the assigned fields. Coordinates and prioritizes EH&S support to UCSF Health and the Medical Center Safety Office. Responds directly to regulatory agencies at the local, state, and federal level. Additionally, represents UCSF EH&S at UC system wide meetings, seminars, and working groups.

Oversees the industrial hygiene program that operates within the UCSF EH&S department. Manages a specialized technical team that includes expertise in hazardous building materials, indoor air quality, environmental monitoring, respiratory protection, and Joint Commission Environment of Care compliance. Has significant responsibility to achieve broadly stated goals through subordinate team members. Determines objectives, directs programs, develops strategies and policies, manages human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with a high degree of autonomy. Proactively assesses risk to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational assets. Determines strategies for programs with organization-wide impact.

As manager of the occupational safety program, provides leadership support to wide range of Campus Life Services stakeholders within Finance and Administration Services. Responsible for Facilities Services Center of Excellence overseeing comprehensive safety program for over 400 staff including custodians, trades, and engineers.

Exercises decisive project management oversight for campus wide ergonomics and human factors program. Provide proactive strategic direction with integration into Capital Projects and Facility Services design, construction, and furniture, fixtures, and other equipment (FF&E).

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $113,500 - $258,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Office of Environment, Health and Safety provides technical support and services for UCSF Campus and UCSF Health in the following specialties: hazardous materials management, environmental compliance, ergonomics, fire and life safety, radiation safety, chemical safety, biological safety, laboratory safety, industrial hygiene, food facility safety, industrial safety, and others.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelors degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Eight (8) or more years of related work experience
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Excellent management skills to effectively lead and direct subordinate staff
  • Experience working in biomedical research and healthcare environments
  • Expertise in industrial hygiene and development of exposure monitoring programs
  • Comprehensive and thorough knowledge and understanding of EH&S technical requirements, logistics, materials and operations, rules, regulations, laws, etc.
  • Excellent skills to create, develop, implement EH&S projects / programs
  • Excellent skills to appropriately and efficiently respond to and direct the response to emergencies and critical situations, including follow-up evaluation and critique of response efficacy; recommend, develop and implement changes to emergency response as required
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including advanced political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment
