The Facilities Management department of Facilities & Services at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Lock Shop Trades Specialist I.

About the Opportunity

Under the direction of the Supervisor and/or Lead, incumbent will provide a safe and secure environment for students, Faculty, and staff
at West Virginia University. This is done by specifying, purchasing, installing, repairing,
rekeying, and maintaining all locks, door hardware, keying systems, safes, and written computerized records of these.

What you'll do:



  • Responsible to function independently as a unique craft or skill.
  • Rekeys locks. Repairs, replaces, or modifies all door hardware such as locks, hinges, closer stops, and coordinators.
  • Fabricates and installs doors, wood and metal door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware.
  • Performs building maintenance for all door security hardware including repairing or adjusting door swing so it will operate correctly.
  • Provides complete written and computerized records of keying systems to all WVU Physical Plant maintained buildings.
  • Opens file cabinets and security files, repairs, or installs new locks on cabinets; fabricates or repairs parts, levers, and springs for locks that are no longer available.
  • Performs repairs and maintains proper function of ADA openers (mechanical or electrical).
  • Works with Building Supervisors and Key Control Supervisors in designing, implementing, and day-to-day operation of key and lock systems.
  • Provides repairs and coordinates with Security in emergency situations such as damaged door locks, safe locks, file cabinets, and key identification. Documents key codes.
  • Interprets blueprints and specifications as required; requisitions or orders parts and supplies and recommends to supervisor the need for material.
  • Install, repair, and maintain all electronic lock hardware. Works closely with electronic personnel to ensure proper operations of same.
  • Operate computers utilizing various software programs, such as: Unifier, C-Bord and Onity lock systems, key data bases, code source, and engraving machines.
  • Updates electronic access of Facilities Management personnel within the Onity and C-Bord access data bases (assigning personnel to templates for access).
  • Operates all equipment trucks, key machines, grinders, and associated locksmithing equipment. Utilizes computer software to cut, list, and track keys and associated locking mechanisms.
  • May be required to perform general maintenance duties either in relation to normal journeyman responsibilities or assisting other trades such as but not limited to: low level electrical connection, lighting, sheet metal fabrication, painting, carpentry, plumbing, millwright work, etc.
  • May be required to move, load, and carry all materials and equipment necessary to complete all phases of assigned maintenance and construction projects. May be required to assist in the effort of moving any existing conditions which interfere with the flow of the project. When project is completed, work site must be left in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Able to respond during off hours to cover emergency situations.


Pay Grade: 13

Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma of GED
  • Must have one of the following:

    • 2 years of experience related to the role.
    • Completion of an associate degree in related area.
    • Completion of a 2 year accredited vocational program.


  • Locksmith experience preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of lock systems, lock hardware, and key types
  • Thorough knowledge of mechanical, carpentry, electrical and electronic systems as related to locksmithing
  • Thorough knowledge of specifications and codes for safety, fire, and disability issues
  • Ability to evaluate and assess key systems appropriate for a specific need
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer for the purpose of data input
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot common locksmithing issues and solve
  • Ability to receive EH&S training on PAPR

Requirements

  • Valid US driver's license required.
  • Work requires speed and accuracy of hand/eye coordination in the use of complicated instruments, equipment, or hand/power tools requiring speed and adeptness. When rekeying a lock, accuracy is a must and also extraordinary skill and precision. - Daily
  • Must be able to climb and work from ladders. - Frequently.
