Equipment Technician

The Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology is a wet lab based basic science department. Currently, the department houses over 60,000 square feet of laboratory space. We are seeking anEquipment Technicianwho will be responsible for performing highly diversified duties to install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain production and facility equipment according to safety, predictive, and productive maintenance systems and processes to support the achievement of the scientific exports and goals of the MMI Department.

The Equipment Technician constantly must coordinate his/her actions with the Management of the MMI Department regarding events and activities affecting the safety of personnel and equipment in the Department. Equipment Technician coordinates with BSPH Facility office the service of the building's systems such as electricity, water supply, heating, air conditioning, special equipment for ice making, cold and heat rooms, etc., which require service in the rooms of the MMI department.

The Equipment Technician must have a high level of knowledge and experience in biosafety issues related to handling pathogens on the department's premises. The Equipment Technician is responsible for compliance with the rules of biological safety by laboratories personnel, conducting briefings, assisting in maintaining biosafety by the requirements of the University, as well as providing biosafety training to MMI labs staff. The Equipment Technician is responsible for the safety pre-inspection in all departmental laboratories and rooms before the JHU annual biosecurity inspection.

Concerning equipment disposal (discarding), the technician is obliged thoroughly prepare equipment, including cleaning, decontamination, certification by the MMI Department and the University Safety Department, notification via a particular form of the JHU Asset Department about the disposal of valued equipment, and coordination with JHU BSPH Facility regarding the utilization schedule.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • MMI Equipment Tracking System is a centralized collection of all the information regarding a particular piece of equipment. In cooperation with iLab Operations System, it is a reference archive for equipment maintenance that can be used to understand the history and service of the Departmental equipment.
  • The equipment technician should keep up-to-date equipment repair information, inform the requester regarding the work being carried out, ask the equipment's manufacturer for a price quote for spare parts, possible service on the manufacturer's side, possible technical online support, as well as attach to the service request all incoming official financial and technical documents.
  • The equipment technician should organize and maintain equipment inventories detailing each device's location and 'vital statistics' (ownership, model number, serial number, manufacturer, purchase date, warranty, etc.), the status of service contracts, the repair history of each instrument, and the schedules for their preventive maintenance and certifications.
  • At the request of the JHU Fixed Assets Shared Service Center, conduct an inventory of the laboratory equipment to update the JHU and JHU MMI Equipment Tracking System regarding the special equipment specified in the request. The equipment technician should:
  • prepare and post instructions and conduct for using specific equipment that can be damaged by improper operation.
  • create the working documents, multiple-choice tests, and additional materials to improve the Departmental staff training.
  • continue to prepare the document for contracting and renewing service contracts with companies related to the preventive service and repair of the high-precision Departmental equipment.
  • Provide supervision a condition of MMI Department premises and in case of need to contact JHU Bloomberg School of PH for service, cleaning, and repair.
  • Update the Departmental equipment database and iLab system.
  • Provide daily inspection and monthly gaskets cleaning of the Departmental backup ULT freezers and refrigerators (room E3300B).
  • Provide a convenient iLab display point for the subtle listing of the currently scheduled work that will be done in the Odd-come-shortly, as shown in the image below:
  • check the BSC (bio-safety cabinets) certification of the entire department and make updates/corrections in the equipment database.
  • provide an inspection and clean condensers, compressors, and air filters of all MMI backup ULT freezers/refrigerators and replace CO2 incubators HEPA filters per owner's iLab request.
  • conduct safety pre-inspection in all departmental laboratories and rooms before the JHU annual biosecurity inspection.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School or GED required.
  • Minimum three years related experience required.
  • Must have valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects.
  • Preferable experience related to ophthalmic equipment.
  • Work requires the ability to test, troubleshoot, and repair complex biomedical equipment and devices.
  • Must be able to analyze all types of equipment malfunctions in order to provide corrective action.
  • Work requires interpersonal skills necessary to interact with professional, para-professional, and technical staff and manufacturers' representatives in providing or obtaining requested information up to 25% of work time.
  • Occasional exposure to contaminated machinery.
  • Frequent exposure to hazards caused by exposed wiring, moving parts and electrical malfunctions.
  • Work requires attention to detail approximately 80% of the time in servicing equipment in the shops. Work requires significant walking and lifting of equipment.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior laboratory experience at the undergraduate or post-undergraduate level.

Starting Salary Range: $21.25 - $36.90 HRLY ($60,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
