CEI Roadway Inspector

Are you seeking a challenging opportunity with a firm committed to our employees and providing excellence? S&ME is looking for an eager and dedicated full-time CEI Roadway Inspector to join our Transportation team in Wilmington, North Carolina.

About the Role:

As a CEI Roadway Inspector, you will work closely with senior technical and professional staff, overseeing and inspecting transportation projects to ensure contractor compliance with contracts, plans, and specifications. Your role as a CEI Roadway Inspector involves observing and inspecting various contractor operations, including earthmoving, paving, bridge construction, and traffic control. Additionally, you will prepare detailed material reports, daily diaries, and field books, conduct project-related calculations and documentation, inspect erosion control devices, verify line and grade using survey equipment, and perform DBE and EEO compliance surveys. You will also attend meetings and interact with third-party construction personnel.

CEI Inspectors are subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions and to various types of weather and field conditions, including heights, uneven terrain, highway traffic, hazards of highway construction sites, and heavy equipment, and may travel/work extended hours, weekends, and/or holidays.

Pay rate is based on the level of experience. Additional incentives are available for existing applicable certifications.

About You:



  • You have one (1) of the following:

    • High school diploma/GED and 2+ years of highway-related construction or inspection experience
    • 2-year technical degree or higher in Civil Engineering Technology or Surveying Technology with 1 year of highway-related construction experience


  • You have at least two (2) active NCDOT-based certification: QMS Roadway/Conventional Density/Concrete Field Technician/Erosion Control Level II and/or Nuclear Gauge
  • You have strong communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
  • You can complete data entry into multiple software applications on a smart device
  • You have good math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure



Are You Willing and Able to:

Perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provide Personal Protective Equipment such as:



  • Standing up to 8 hours a day, up to 12 hours on occasion
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuver field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground and around active construction sites
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
