Assistant Superintendent of Public Grounds

Starting Salary: $81,134

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the Public Grounds Superintendent, organizes and directs
maintenance programs and contract projects related to redesign and upgrading for the Parks,
Cemetery & Forestry Divisions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
* Supervises division employees through Working Foreman in the implementation,
monitoring and assessment of operations. Provides daily direction to the Working
Foreman and inspects work in the field as needed to monitor special operations, projects
or problem areas.
* Participates in employee selection, conducts performance reviews and counsels
employees as needed.
* Develops division budget recommendations; assists in management of the division's
approved budget; and prepares related reports, analyses and budgetary justifications. May
participate in preparation and/or administration of special grants.
* Develops, maintains and updates computerized data management and reporting systems
regarding financial analyses, compliance activities, productivity, etc., and produces
related regular and special reports.
* Assists in the development and/or design of special division projects, plans and/or
specifications involving outside contractors. Participates in management of contractors
involved with the related projects.

* Responds to questions and complaints from the public; resolves referenced issues; keeps
Superintendent advised of any significant problems and the progress in their resolution.
May attend public meetings with the Superintendent to assist in responding to questions.
* Sets up short and long-range work and vacation schedules. Advises as to special work
methods and procedures to follow, safety precautions, regulations and related matters
affecting the work.
* Procures required materials, equipment and supplies to complete projects. Cooperates
with other divisions to ensure the most effective use of personnel and equipment and,
when handling emergency situations or unusual workloads.
* Assists in supervising the Town's snow and ice operations as directed by the Highway
Superintendent.
* Participates in the "On-Call" rotation for issues and or emergencies outside of the normal
working hours of the Public Works operations.
* Assists with management of the Town's tree bylaw and other Town regulations as
directed.
* Performs related duties as assigned.
* Follows safe work practices.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Direct supervision of all Public Grounds employees.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Education, Training and Experience:
Extensive technical or specialized training which is typically acquired through an Associate's
Degree or two years of technical or business school; plus eight years of related experience,
preferably supervisory.

Special Requirements:
* Possession of a Massachusetts Class D driver's license required; CDL Class B preferred
* Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer License Class 2A preferred
* State of Massachusetts Pesticide License Preferred
* Massachusetts Arborist Association Certified Arborist or equivalent preferred

* Periods of supervising or inspecting in non-office environments, including garages,
water supply stations, sewer facilities, landfills, parks and recreational areas.
* Some periods spent outside subject to weather conditions while inspecting or directing

uncomfortable physical positions.
* Some exposure to high noise and vibration levels from heavy equipment.
* May spend sustained periods at computer terminal or on telephone.
