Assistant Superintendent of Water and Sewer

Starting Salary: $81,134

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Water and Sewer Superintendent, this position supervises
activities related to the maintenance and operations of the Town's water distribution system and
sewage collection system and serves as a liaison between the Water and Sewer Foreman and the
Water and Sewer Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

* Coordinates all Water and Sewer Division activities with the Division Foreman.
* Supervises the work of Water and Sewer Division employees engaged in the
construction, maintenance and repair of the water distribution system and the sanitary
sewer collection system.
* Prepares plans for the procurement of supplies and materials and implements procedures
and methods for inventory control.
* Maintains current safety and training programs and performs regular safety appraisals
taking prompt corrective action as needed.
* Makes available technical training to all employees; observes, appraises and reports to
the Director on the capabilities and performance of employees.
* Maintains records, prepares reports as needed and recommends improvement in
procedures and methods.
* Keeps current on the latest technology, procedures, methods, systems and materials
employed or used in the industry by reading literature, self-study and attending special
courses and seminars.

* Regularly operates automobiles and light trucks. Occasionally operates heavy equipment
during emergencies.
* Stays current on OSHA regulations as well as federal, state, and local code requirements
relating to the construction industry.
* Processes personal injury reports and prepares motor vehicle accident reports, as needed.
* Processes completed work orders received from the Division Foreman by assigning costs,
maintaining a computerized work order database and forwarding orders to the Business
Manager.
* Assists the Superintendent in the preparation of the Division budget.
* Carries out the policies of the Town and the directives of the Water and Sewer
Superintendent.
* Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
* Position requires on-call availability for emergency situations.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Direct supervision of all Water and Sewer employees.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Education, Training and Experience:
* Extensive technical or specialized training which is typically acquired through an
Associate's Degree or two years of technical or business school; plus eight years of
experience in water and/or wastewater utility systems; or any equivalent combination of
education, training and/or experience.

Special Requirements:
* Possession of a Massachusetts Class D driver's license required; CDL Class B preferred.
* Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Massachusetts Grade 3D Certified Water Supply
Operator's License.
* Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer License Class 2A preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work performed in the field involves exposure to hazards associated with extreme weather
conditions; exposure to extremes in noise and odors when making site visits to various project
activities; may be required to wear safety equipment. Work often takes place in wet and damp
conditions such as flooding and water main breaks. Other work is performed indoors at public
works facilities, maintenance shop, and typical office spaces. On-call 24/7 to respond to
emergencies.

Moderate to strenuous physical effort is required to perform supervisory duties. Must have the
strength and agility to climb, lift, balance, carry, operate tools and perform other physical
functions associated with work responsibilities. Must have the ability to operate automobiles,
trucks and equipment. May be required to lift equipment weighing 30 - 60 pounds. Required to
stand and walk for long periods. A significant portion of shift is spent driving, walking, standing,
traversing uneven terrain, and crouching. Ability to monitor radio messages while doing other
work. Ability to sit for long periods, as necessary. Physical stamina to sustain long work days,
including evening meetings, as necessary. Excellent eyesight and hearing well within normal
ranges and the ability to distinguish colors.
