Position Announcement

Provides and coordinates academic and personal advising for Student Support Services (SSS) students within the University's TRIO Grant program. This includes planning and implementing student activities, arranging for students to receive appropriate support services such as study skills, time management, test taking strategies, etc. for the purpose of promoting academic success and retention among the students.


Responsibilities

  • Provide and coordinate academic and personal advising for SSS students.
  • Monitor student performance and assist SSS staff with Student Education Plans (SEPs) and Student Graduation Plans (SGPs) to ensure that student contracts are met; track student contracts.
  • Interview and assess the needs of potential SSS project participants.
  • Assist students with financial aid information and maintain referral information for project participants.
  • Create and teach study skills curriculum for SSS students and provide appropriate support services, including but not limited to coaching in the following areas: study skills, time management, test taking strategies, financial literacy, etc.
  • Teach other courses and curriculum associated with the SSS program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Two years' related experience (secondary, post-secondary, or higher education) required, as well as experience in working with members of underrepresented populations as exemplified by project participants.
  • A personal background in overcoming barriers similar to those confronted by TRIO students (e.g., low income, first generation, students with disabilities, etc.) preferred.
  • Experience in developing Student Education Plans (SEPs) and must have knowledge of learning theories.
  • Experience with educational opportunities and student financial aid.
  • Knowledge of academic testing, learning systems and academic support services; familiarity with retention strategies.
  • Respect for all individuals and a positive attitude towards capacity of disadvantaged youth to success in post-secondary education.

Supplemental Information

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time overtime-exempt staff position. Annual salary of $44,000 for a Bachelor's degree-qualified applicant and $47,000 for a Master's degree-qualified applicant. Desired start date of September 2024.
