Carries out applied research on soybean pests and summarizes data. Assists with research of other members of the laboratory. Assists in general lab upkeep coordinating staff, ensuring equipment is functional, insect and plant husbandry). Reviews literature as suggested by the investigation. Summarizes findings.

40% Carries out applied entomological research in field and lab. Adapts and maintains equipment for each assay, carries out bioassays in a safe and effective manner, basic post-processing and tabulation. Summarizes data by capturing summary statistics (means, sample sizes, etc.)

30% Insect and plant husbandry, such as maintaining colonies of aphids and other plant pests, maintenance of health plants to propagate insects, collection of immature/adults, sexing, collecting from field and tabulating.

15% Prepares laboratory by setting up equipment for research projects. Maintains laboratory by performing tasks such as cleanup, replenishing supplies and removing chemical waste.

15% Oversees up to two undergraduates in maintenance of experiments and data collection in the field.

Required:

• BA/BS or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years; applies knowledge and skill to a recurring task or activity with emphasis typically on precision and timeliness of execution.
• Previous research experience with soybean crops and pests

The Department of Entomology is engaged in teaching, extension and research related to biodiversity and systematics, ecology, physiology, neurobiology, and functional genomics of diverse insects and other invertebrates, including pollinators, mosquitoes and ticks, and management of pests in residential, commercial/industrial, agricultural, forested, and urban landscapes. The department offers MS and PhD degrees in Entomology, and an undergraduate Insect Science Minor. The Department maintains the University of Minnesota Insect Collection, one of the largest university-affiliated insect collections in North America with > 4 million specimens, representing over 53,000 described species.
