DIRECTOR, FOGARTY INTERNATIONAL CENTER
THE POSITION: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director, Fogarty International Center (FIC). The FIC advances the NIH mission by supporting global health research conducted by U.S. and international investigators, facilitating partnerships between health research institutions in the U.S. and abroad, and training the next generation of scientists to address global health needs. To support its mission, FIC has a workforce of 86 staff, including 62 FTEs and 24 non-FTEs, with an annual budget of $95 million.
FIC investments strengthen capacity at research institutions in low- and middle-income countries across the globe to help develop the knowledge and evidence needed to confront global health challenges. Current research and training priorities include HIV/AIDS, emerging infectious diseases, bioethics, the use of mobile and other appropriate technologies for health, data science, brain disorders, noncommunicable diseases, trauma and injury, and environmental and occupational health, among others. The FIC complements and supports the work of other NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices by identifying unique, often transdisciplinary global scientific opportunities that cut across the mission of NIH.
This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity for an exceptional leader to serve as the chief executive for FIC who will provide strong and visionary leadership, executive management, and strategic direction to an organization dedicated to global health and international collaboration through biomedical research and training. The Director promotes global health research within and outside NIH, builds and sustains partnerships with collaborating organizations of national and global scale, and provides leadership to FIC staff.
This position reports directly to the Director, National Institutes of Health and serves as the key advisor to the Director and also engages at the NIH organizational level on aspects of international policy, foreign relations, and NIH representation at the Department of Health and Human Services, particularly with the Office of Global Affairs, and with other agencies of the U.S. Government. The FIC Director represents the Center and NIH in the international community and before Congress as an advocate for FIC's diverse programs and initiatives and ensures the stewardship of its resources.

LOCATION: Bethesda, MD (NIH Main Campus)
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in global health, science, public health, and/or other relevant disciplines. A demonstrated knowledge of and extensive experience in global health is required. Candidates must possess skills to create, empower, and manage a very diverse, multidisciplinary team and demonstrate the ability to plan, execute, and supervise research, publish scientific research results, and allocate staff and financial resources. Candidates must have extensive knowledge of and/or experience in the Federal research grants administration process. Have demonstrated achievement in interprofessional collaborations, as well as experience and demonstrated ability in the administration and management of a major national, international, or large collaborative research program. In addition, candidates should have a broad familiarity and in-depth working knowledge of research and programmatic areas in the scope of the FIC, and proven expertise in multidisciplinary research programs and/or experience in key priorities is highly desired. Key attributes include: a systems thinker, process innovator, team leader, successful collaborator, and a skilled communicator with an innovative and strategic approach to planning and decision-making.
SALARY/BENEFITS: The Director, FIC will be appointed at a salary commensurate with the selectee’s qualifications and experience and NIH salary guidelines. Full Federal benefits will be provided, including retirement, health and life insurance, leave, and savings plan (401(k) equivalent). A recruitment or relocation incentive may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid.
